Florianopolis is in southern Brazil and is most commonly known for it's great white sandy beaches and it's great surfing waves which attract both armatures and professionals like. The small island relies on tourism as it's primary industry and thus strives to keep all guests happy, and to expand on it's offerings. They have done a great job at expanding on just the beaches and natural beauty of the city by reaching out to other demographics.

One of the famous hot spots in the city is Conceição Lagoon, which attracts not only tourists but athletes who are exercising on the beach, windsurfers, sailors, kite surfers, and people riding jet skis. The average water temperature during the summer is 27C and one of the reasons this area attracts so many tourists and locals alike. The neighborhood aptly named Conceição is the busiest tourist spot in town, with numerous bars and trendy restaurants throughout. The busiest nights of the city are here. It is also common to have luau at Ponta da Areia, with performances by many local bands.

Mirante Manoel de Menezes, is an observatory located in the Morro da Lagoa and offers one of the most beautiful views of Florianópolis. On clear days you can even see the ocean from the beaches of Joaquina and Mole. Much of the Lagoa da Conceição is guaranteed to create a wonderful view! Mirante Ponto de Vista is another observatory and it offers almost exactly the opposite view to the Mirante Manoel de Menezes. It is located on top of the Da Barra Hill and is open from 10:00 am until 7:30pm.

Anyone who does not appreciate a beautiful beach will certainly will not see the magic and grace that Florianopolis has to offer. They are definitely not the only attractions within the city, but they sure are the "stars" for tourists visiting the capital of Santa Catarina. It has various beaches for every individual taste, after all, there are over forty different beaches in Florianopolis. There are beaches available for those people who prefer a beach with a fully built out infrastructure to those who would prefer a half-deserted primitive beach, with little to no infrastructure available. Amount the hottest beaches in the city are Praia da Joaquina, Praia Mole, Jurerê, and Lagoinha. For those looking for something a little different, check out Galheta Beach, which you arrive at after a short hike along a 300 meter trail from the north of Praia Mole, where naturism is optional, as the Brazilians like to say, or for those coming from other areas, a clothing optional beach.

Florianopolis also has a historical downtown, which runs through the Praça XV de Novembro. The surroundings here warrant a visit, especially the many old historic houses, and the famous old City Public Market which is very lively on Saturday mornings. Lots of great accomodations are available in the city nearby these activities, such as, Ingeleses Praia Hotel, which is well known and a beautiful place to stay.

Since April 2005, Florianopolis has been home to the 22nd base for the Tamar Project, which aims to raise awareness about the conservation of sea turtles. In the visitor center, there are monitors, video rooms, and many permanent exhibits. It runs from Tuesday to Sunday, including holidays, from 8:30am to 5:00pm.

Florianopolis has many more attractions, but if you visit only these suggestions, you will not be disappointed! The best times to visit are during summer when the weather is at it’s best and when the water is warm.
